Issued 08-21-2008
Ref: BOLO, Be On the Look Out for Possible Thieves, Two men posing as salesmen

We have had two reports in the last two days of two men gaining entrance to homes while posing as salesmen. They claim to be selling floor products or carpeting and have twice managed to persuade the homeowners to allow them inside. One man keeps the homeowner distracted while the other wanders around, apparently looking for valuables.

The suspects are described as two white males, one younger than the other, possibly 20 - 30 years old, and the second is possibly 40 - 50 years old. They were driving a small pickup truck with an amber light on top. There was a sign on the side of the truck door that said Environmental or Environmentall.

Never allow a stranger in your home, particularly someone you have not invited there. Salesmen are prohibited form going door to door in the Township without a Solicitor permit. Ask to see it. If they don’t show it, lock the door and call police. If you have any contact with these men, or have already had contact, call the Miami Township Police dispatch center at 732-2231 and ask that a police officer be sent to your home to speak to you.

Don’t be a Victim. Be Safe!

Issued July 18, 2008
Ref: Day-Time Burglaries

There has been four day-time burglaries of residences in Miami Township in the past ten days. We have been able to identify a suspect in at least one of our day-time burglaries. We had a day-time burglary in Miami Trails on 7/17/08 at around 1100 hours. The suspect’s vehicle was a bright red Ford Mustang with a black convertible top. The Mustang was the newest body style probably a 2007 or 2008. The vehicle was driven by a white female, medium build, with long dark hair (hair hung to the middle of her back). There was also a male sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle. Neighboring jurisdictions also have numerous open day-time burglary cases.

If anyone recalls seeing this vehicle please call us at 248-3721 and ask for Detective Bullock.

If you see one like it in your neighborhood,

1) try to get a license plate number, and

2) call the dispatch center at 732-2231 and ask that an officer be sent to investigate.

Issued 06/10/2008
Ref: Burglar Alarm Response Policy

We received a call today from a homeowner who experienced a burglar alarm at her residence while she was at work.
Her alarm company, Brinks, attempted to contact her, and when they could not reach her they called a neighbor who was on the contact list.
The neighbor asked if the police were responding to the alarm. The Brinks representative told her no, that they police would not respond until they had spoken with an authorized key holder for the residence. The Miami Township Police were never notified of this alarm. The neighbor called the homeowner and told her about this. The homeowner called Brinks and was given the same story. The homeowner asked that the notification process be change for her residence to allow police to be dispatched immediately. The Brinks representative said she would have to see if the local alarm permit rules would let her do that.

Miami Township does not have an alarm permit process. We respond to all alarms when notified.

Approximately 90% of the alarms to which we respond will not have a key holder available to meet with us.
Approximately 99% of all alarms we receive are false alarms.
We are a service oriented department and we respond anyway. You would not expect anything less.

If you have any questions about this, please contact us or discuss it with your alarm company.

Ref: Solicitation ALERT

We have been notified that unidentified persons are calling citizens in the community asking for donations to a “Drug Awareness” program.
The reports say that the person sounds very authentic and that you can hear what sounds like a police radio in the background.
When asked for a call back phone number, the person hangs up.

We are not soliciting donations from anyone for a Drug Awareness program or any other program.

When asked for a donation to any group, always ask for an address and a phone number of the organization, ask if the person is a hired solicitor and what percent of the donation goes to the program and to the soliciting company, ask for time to think about your answer, and never be afraid to say no.

If you think that you have been misled by a solicitor or you feel that you have received undue pressure from a solicitor, please contact us at the police department.
