The School Resource Officer position began service in our schools in late August of the 1998 school year. The job entails many diverse duties and activities, making each week a challenging work environment. The School Resource Officer is seen as a role model, counselor and a teacher. There is an emphasis on establishing a positive interactive relationship between the police and the students. A traditional law enforcement role is still the central function of the Officer through reporting, investigation and resolution of problems. School disciplinary policies are broad and progressive, evolving with the current trends and problems. With the School Resource Officer working in conjunction with the administration, a direct legal venue is available to investigation, court and social agencies, legal information, powers of arrest and follow up.
The SRO program is an accepted and integral part of the high school culture. Now in its fifth year the position flows in sync with the high school calendar. In evaluating the program, administrators were consulted for their insight, opinions and ideas. All concurred that they were satisfied with the results of having an SRO in the building. They expressed their desire to maintain the course we have established.
