KNOX BOX RAPID ENTRY SYSTEM

In order to access buildings quickly, minimize forced entry damage, and protect EMS/Firefighters from injury, we have adopted the Knox-Box Rapid Entry System. Currently, more than seven thousand fire departments and the communities they protect enjoy the benefits of this proven system. DO YOU have buildings or property in Miami Township secured by locked doors or a gate? You can PREVENT UNNECESSARY DAMAGE to your building or gate in the event of an emergency by participating in this program. The Knox lock box system can give the Fire Department emergency access while giving you peace of mind that your property is secure. The Miami Township Fire/EMS Department has invested in this system. Should you?

JUVENILE FIRE SETTERS

Children set fires for many reasons. If a child plays with fire that doesn't mean they are a problem child. When children have repeated and intentional fire starting behaviors, fascination becomes a problem. Through education, and in some cases counseling, children and their families can be given the skills to change this dangerous behavior. Studies show that fires started by children playing with matches and lighters are the leading cause of fire deaths for pre-school children and account for more than 1/3 of their fires deaths.

SENIOR GATE KEEPER PROGRAM

Miami Township Fire & EMS crews are trained to recognize and assist senior citizens that may be at risk of health problems, due to the resident’s physical, emotional or environmental conditions. The responders then provide a pathway to area organizations for appropriate assistance. A ‘Gate Keeper’ is a person with our department that coordinates the program and makes all referral calls to area organizations. Follow-up is also provided to the employees who recognize any problems with our area senior citizens. The Gate Keeper Program was established in 1993. Organized in 1992, our members are from our community's senior population, governmental officials, Fire/EMS & and the Police department. The coalition was established to enhance the quality of life for the senior citizens in the Miami Township / Milford community. CLERMONT COUNTY SENIOR SAFETY PROGRAM

Each year, many older adults are injured in or around the home. Most home injuries are the result of hidden hazards that are easily over looked, but easy to fix. By identifying these hazards and taking steps to correct them, many injuries might be prevented.

The three leading causes of in-home injuries for seniors have been identified as falls, fires and medication interactions. The Clermont County Senior Safety Program was created by the Clermont County Senior Safety Council to help seniors reduce the risk of injuries.

The Senior Safety Program offers free home safety checks to help identify potential in-home safety hazards. Free grab bars with installation along with other needed safety aids are available when you receive a home safety check. We also offer, to any interested organization an educational presentation called “ Risky Business”. This hour long comprehensive senior home safety presentation addresses the issues of falls, fires, and medication management.

For more information on what you can do to eliminate hazards in your home and to schedule an in-home safety evaluation or a senior safety presentation contact: Linda Walsh, R.S., Clermont County General Health District, Telephone: 513-732-7499; Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Life Safety Education Center

LIFE SAFETY EDUCATION CENTER

The Life Safety Education Center is designed to assist in fire injury prevention education. The trailer is 30 feet long, 12 feet high, and weighs 6000 pounds. It was donated to the fire department by the Miamiville Emergency Support Services. The center features a control room which is equipped with closed circuit TV system and a smoke generator. Smoke can be directed to individual rooms by gate valves. Smoke detectors are located in each room and can be individually activated by the control room. There are two floors, with each floor being a classroom. The first floor is set up as a living room and contains the 911 phone. Here, children can practice making 911 calls to the control room operator. Next is a working kitchen with a stove and refrigerator. Kitchen safety topics can be demonstrated and practiced here. The upstairs is designed as a bedroom. Here the children learn two ways out, and how to climb down a chain ladder. Both levels have a heated door to teach how to properly test a door before opening it.

BEDROOM

This is the upstairs bedroom and classroom. It has a small bed, a wall mirror, a bench to sit on, windows with curtains and blinds, and a sliding door to the balcony. There are roof power vents to evacuate the smoke after training a class. The sliding glass doors exit to the balcony where there is a chain ladder for escape training. On the left entering the room is the heated door. There are power vent controls in the room along with a call button for smoke. The walls are painted with safety logos such as Stop, Drop, and Roll.

KITCHEN

The kitchen is located in the center of the trailer and is complete with a stove, microwave, refrigerator, sink, and coffee maker. All appliances are in working order and available for use by the staff for teaching. Most of the appliances are 120 volt house current and require connection to an external power source. There is a water tank that hold fresh water and a 12 volt pump to provide water on demand. Some amenities are kept stocked on board for the crew (mostly coffee). There are regular cabinets for storage, and a complete set of pots and pans for the stove. The kitchen is off the main entrance door and the first room everyone enters in the trailer.

LIVING ROOM

The living room is located in the center of the trailer and to the left of the control room on the lower level. There is a realistic looking fireplace in the back wall. The 911 phone is located on the left wall and is connected to the control room. There are benches for seating on both walls. The rear door opens out to a deck and is handicap accessible with a special ramp stored outside. The heated door is located at the entrance to the room. As with the bedroom, there are fire safety messages painted on the walls.

CONTROL ROOM

This is the control room where two people can sit and control most functions. The smoke generator is on the floor and smoke is passively piped into the rooms. Valves on the wall can shut-off the smoke to any room. A closed circuit TV is equipped with an automatic scanning controller to switch among cameras. The buttons on the wall control for the individual smoke detectors located in each rooms. An intercom connects to the living room 911 phone. The P.A. system and remote microphone controls are located in this room.
